FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Our nation is shocked at Wednesday’s shooting at a church in Minnesota that claimed the lives of two children. The Minneapolis police chief called it a deliberate act of violence against innocent children. This is the first week back at school for the students of Annunciation Catholic School. This incident is a stunning act of depravity, the gunfire erupted as the young people bowed their heads in prayer.
Our hearts go out to the families of the 8- and 10-year-olds who lost their lives in such a shocking and senseless act of violence. We pray for the 17 people who were injured, who now must deal with not only their physical wounds but the emotional trauma that comes with being the victim of gun violence.
The killer, who is said to be in their 20’s, matched cruelty with cowardice by committing suicide by gun.
The shooter used a rifle, shotgun and pistol to fire dozens of rounds through the windows as the children were kneeling in their pews. They were attending mass to celebrate the new school year.
As we mourn for the tragic loss of life, this latest deadly shooting is an urgent reminder of the peril all Americans are in when people with mental health conditions have easy access to guns. We renew our plea to the Congress to enact meaningful gun safety legislation that will keep weapons out of the hands of people who should not have them.
We offer our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this unspeakable tragedy. And we pray for a quick recovery for those who were injured.
