JOINT STATEMENT ON MASS SHOOTINGS IN EL PASO AND DAYTON
By Cyrus Vance, Manhattan District Attorney, and Mike Feuer, Los Angeles City Attorney Co-Chairs, Prosecutors Against Gun Violence
“Gun violence is the public health and safety emergency of our time. In less than 24 hours, America has been roiled by two mass shootings, leaving 29 dead and dozens wounded. Since the beginning of the year, there have been at least 32 shootings involving three or more fatalities. And while garnering less national attention, each year thousands more lives are lost to gun violence on our streets and in our homes.
“But we are not helpless. As prosecutors, we urge, in the strongest possible terms, that our national leaders take meaningful action. We agree with Senator Lindsay Graham’s statement that it is ‘…time to do more than pray. Time to enact common sense legislation in Congress to empower states to deal with those who present a danger to themselves and others…’ And the American People demand even more. In addition to Gun Violence Restraining Orders, both houses of Congress must pass Universal Background Checks, ban assault weapons, and prohibit the sale of large capacity magazines – NOW.”
